Planted for their ornamental appeal in a time before people were educated about their invasive nature, Callery pears (Pyrus calleryana), line our campus walkways. They are also prone to blowing apart in the wind as seen in the photo below. Native alternatives include American plum (Prunus americana), Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida), Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) Hawthorn (Crataegus spp.) and Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea) http://tinyurl.com/zshyuwf

Andrew attended the Ohio Hellbender Partnership meeting today and toured a facility where hellbenders are bred for release in designated Ohio streams. Hellbenders are the largest amphibians in Ohio sometimes growing to 2 feet in length and are currently listed as an endangered species by the Ohio Division of Wildlife. You can read more about Hellbenders at http://home.greglipps.com/surveys/eastern-hellbender/ohio-hellbender-partnership

Andrew and I would like to thank everyone for the overwhelming support and cards, letters, messages and remembrances from our family, friends and co-workers for both his mom and our special friend Howard "Mac" Albin. We are so very blessed to have you all in our lives and especially during those very difficult two weeks filled with immeasurable loss and sadness.

A well written and moving
tribute with a dash of humor by Tommy Springer as he remembers his friend and colleague Mac Albin. Tommy Springer started his environmental career as a resource management intern for the Metro Parks and worked closely with Andrew and Mac for two seasons. He was a park technician for almost a decade after that and is now the conservation technician and wildlife specialist for Fairfield County Soil and Water. Andrew and Mac have had many fine interns over the years that they thought very highly of and Tommy is one.

I’ve known the Honorable Howard T. since 1993 when I was an intern with the parks. Andrew became the park arborist on the same day as Mac became the aquatic ecologist and they have shared an office for almost 20 years. Outside of their work the three of us have spent those years tromping through creeks and woods making observations about every living species that has crossed our path. We’ve taken almost 10,000 photos, had passionate conversations about an assortment of environmental topics, put three restaurants out of business, worked on biotic surveys and programs, slogged through every type of weather imaginable on countless adventures, and consumed I don’t know how many bottles of wine and steaks on the grill at the field station in the process. There is nothing I can say that will convey the depth and breadth of our friendship. Spring on the blue trail, fall on the creek. This closes the final chapter in the Schlotzsky Chronicles. Andrew and Mac. Last program together June 2015.

Worst Valentine's Day of my life. We spent it with Mac. Just hoping we were able to give him some comfort during his final days on this earth. Being a teenager and not getting a Valentine card somehow doesn't compare...

Friday, February 12, 2016 RIP Marlene Boose
Andrew's mother passed today after a long and horrendous battle with cancer.
Her body is not so white as anemone petals nor so smooth—nor so remote a thing. It is a field of the wild carrot taking the field by force; the grass does not raise above it. Here is no question of whiteness, white as can be, with a purple mole at the center of each flower. Each flower is a hand’s span of her whiteness. Wherever his hand has lain there is a tiny purple blemish. Each part is a blossom under his touch to which the fibres of her being stem one by one, each to its end, until the whole field is a white desire, empty, a single stem, a cluster, flower by flower, a pious wish to whiteness gone over— or nothing. William Carlos

Went to mom and dad's to celebrate Bob's birthday by eating Marion's piazza and then stopped on the way home at Prairie Oaks Metro Park. Andrew wanted to show me where he has been working recently and this stately swamp white oak. We were lucky to catch the sky light show. Happy Birthday Bob!

I got Lacy a new bed last week b/c she lays under the buffet. I didn't get Nolan one b/c he has chewed up two of them and he's always on the move. This morning he was letting me know that his feelings were hurt b/c Lacy got a bed and he didn't. I went and got him one on my lunch hour. No spoiled dogs live in this house...

This is the area where prairie seed is being dried at Sharon Woods. Andrew and his co workers have been gathering these forb seeds over the past few days. The prairie seed is harvested by hand, by combine or by seed stripper. It then has to be dried which requires it to be turned twice a day for about a week. A labor intensive endeavor, which has to be done under dry weather conditions, all in order to keep the Metro Park prairies in top notch condition.

Fayette County Fairgrounds. Great time today at the show after a three year hiatus from showing. Beautiful weather, nice facility, well organized gathering. Was pleased with the judges remarks on my juniors and also found a nice chocolate agouti doe for my line. Big Darby just took first in his class and went on to compete for Best of Breed at only 10 weeks old.

Rocky Fork Metro Park.-Awesome dog park with partition for small and large breed dogs soon to open along with a very nice trail that Nolan enjoyed very much. Andrew and his co-workers put a lot of sweat into this park all the way from clearing trails to developing some very nice interpretive signage. If you are in Franklin County your tax dollars helped build it so check it out and enjoy!! Get outside people!! And if you have a dog please remember to scoop your poop....
