Dragon Hunter

This is the dragonfly observation lab and rearing area for the larva. The light is shining on a newly hatched dragonfly.

This morning a Dragon Hunter hatched. See how shiny his wings are? They are still inflating. It sometimes takes hours until the wings are ready for flight.

Andrew prepares to photograph the specimen in re-created habitat. Dragonflies are sensitive to heat and cold. They are chilled so they remain still for photography. They warm up gradually during the photography session and then fly off then they are ready. All the equipment has to be ready prior to the session and the photographer has to work quickly or his model may fly away.

Full body shot for positive identification.

Veins of the wings. They look like stained glass.

Full frontal view of the face. The eyes are the big big bulges on the side.

Look close-under the ladder at who is "helping" Andrew. Yes its our girl Pip. :-) And the Dragon Hunter has flown off into the sunset.

Very cool! Where did you get the larva? Do they spin a cacoon like a butterfly?
