American Dagger Moth Caterpillar

This caterpillar was climbing up the brick front of our house this evening. We interrupted its ascent to take photographs and move it to a more suitable location to prepare for pupation. The ADM can be cream, white or yellow-its most distinct feature are the five long black hair pencils or tufts. They feed on many different trees including hickory, maple, basswood and box elder just to name a few. Take care in handling as their hairs can cause an allergic reaction resulting in a stinging sensation and rash on some individuals.

Very interesting looking guy. I don't think I've seen one of these. The moth is not terribly flashy, is it.

Forgot to mention - Van and his girls are raising some Monarch caterpillars. They've done it in the past with success. Mom (Melissa) and the girls found some tiny ones on the milkweeds growing in the barnyard area.

I've seen these caterpillars before but I'll have to check the internet to see what the moth looks like.

Honestly, Annette, you need to work for National Geographic. Wonderful pictures!
