Pears are Canned!

We picked about 120 pounds of pears in Kentucky last weekend. I brought home 30 # and our friends kept the rest to make wine. We got them canned today. Note to self-pears are time consuming to peel (because you can't blanch them in boiling water like you can some other fruits).

Ouch!

Poor Daisy. She was playing with Pipsqueak in the yard this evening and stepped on a bee. A couple minutes after the fact, Andrew and I were eating dinner, when I saw the bee on the living room floor and wondered aloud how it got there. Andrew picked it up and tossed it in the trash. Daisy at this point was in the chair licking her paw and when she got down we noticed she was limping and hold up her paw. It must have hurt because she didn't want to go on her nightly walk. I put her in my red wagon and she was perfectly happy being chauffeured around the neighborhood like a queen. The sympathy paw...

Braided Headwraps

My friend's daugher saw a really cool plaited headwrap at Anthropologie on line.
She talked to my friend and me about making one for her and I actually found a pattern for an Anthropologie Inspired Braided Headwrap on Ravelry.
My friend made up a pattern for the plaited (braided) wrap and I knitted the off the pattern from Ravelry. We like them both and they are quick and easy to knit. The college student who modeled the wrap I made said it was soft and she would definately wear one.

Kentucky Quilt Trail

Scenes from the Kentucky Quilt Trail. In my opinion, a very innovative advertising initiative produced by the Kentucky Department of Travel and Tourism. These particular barns are on the 460 Route.

Red River Gorge

On 10.10.10 we visited the Red River Gorge area of Daniel Boone National Forest. All I can say is gorgeous! Definitely worth a trip and especially in the fall when the colors are spectacular. Our friends live just a few miles away in Wellington, KY and we had a wonderful weekend with them as well.

Fellers Felling

Andrew helped his long time friend and former college roommate Randy, take down a couple of dead trees along his farm fence down for firewood. There are Kentucky Mountain Pleasure horses in the pasture and so these dead standing trees are also a safety hazard.
Andrew attaches a bull rope to tree
Tension in the direction the tree is to fall, is applied via a pulley attached to a tractor
Andrew makes a face notch in the trunk of the tree above the fence so the fence doesn't get annihilated when the tree fallsThis view is from the safety of the road where the photographer (me) is now standing.
Randy on the tractor pulls tension rope and tree comes toppling down (far right)
Andrew is now safely back from the tree up the hill beyond
Since this tree shattered on impact only the large trunk needed to be cut
Rubble pile of wood being sawed

2010 UARC Specialty Show

I left this morning at 5:15 am for Marietta, OH having agreed to serve as show superintendent for the annual UARC Specialty Show. The superintendent's job is mostly in name only as the show secretary ends up with all the paperwork and such (thanks Lisa!). Our show consisted of a check-in station, raffle table and angora wool display and there were actually three shows today with Blennerhasset and Jackson's local clubs also hosting in the same location. It was a long day but I enjoyed visiting with fellow rabbit enthusiasts and spending time with my rabbits; it was also productive from the standpoint of obtaining some wins that I really wasn't expecting since I felt that my rabbits weren't at their best in regard to their length and condition of their coats. In any case Garnet was Best of Breed in the specialty show which finished her grand champion status and she was also Best Opposite of Breed in the Blennerhasset show which got her an extra leg and a cute little glass pumpkin. Blackberry and Ryan took Best of Breed and Best Opposite of Breed respectively in the Jackson show and they each earned a leg as juniors along with trophies and ribbons. After the show I had dinner, complete with a slice of the most heavenly chocolate peanut butter pie, with a friend at a popular local restaurant, and then I drove home in the pouring rain. Overall not a bad day! :-)
