Baltimore Checkerspot

Chrysalis-third stage of life-cycle preceded by egg and larvea
Butterfly -final stage of life-cycle

The Baltimore Checkspot butterfly is relatively rare in Ohio. They dependent on wetlands and their eggs are laid in a mass on leaves and stems of turtlehead, corn sorrel and common lousewort, all wetland plants. They are intensely localized but large numbers are usually present when found. This particular specimen was photographed in Hocking County, OH last week.
