Red-breasted Nuthatch

Andrew put out a bunch of bird feeders yesterday hoping to attract, among others, some nuthatches. Not only did we get a nuthatch but it is a red breasted which is less common in our area.  Apparently there is a seed shortage in the north woods which is their typical range, forcing them south in an a early migration. Perhaps a knowledgeable biologist from the north would comment on this (Sherry?) This particular nuthatch has been hanging around for a day or so, we heard the song and Andrew hightailed it off to Wild Birds for feed.  He was rewarded by an almost immediate bop on the head by said bird who was in such a hurry to get to the feeder that it didn't even care that Andrew was 10 feet away taking photos. They are such sweet little birds.

How ironic!!! Last Sunday in Butler, OH, while performing at the Prairie Peddler Festival I also saw a Red-breasted Nuthatch!!!! I was shocked and delight! It was making it's way around a large tree trunk five foot from us. I've seen pictures of the little feller but never in the flesh. ;- )
